What is digital signage and how does it work
7 min read
Digital signage replaces the printed posters in your store with screens that show menus, prices and promotions you can change whenever you want. Here is how it works, how it differs from print and from DOOH, and how Displei.co solves it with artificial intelligence.
What is digital signage?
Digital signage is the use of screens — a TV, a monitor or a tablet — to show a business's own commercial information: the menu, the prices, the promotions and the notices of the day. Content is managed from software, updated remotely, and nothing has to be printed.
In practice, it is the connected version of the sign on your counter. Instead of printing a sheet with the breakfast combo and taping it to the wall, the business publishes that combo on a screen and changes it when the price changes, when the product runs out, or when the afternoon promotion starts. The screen stays on and the software shows whatever belongs to each hour of the day.
When someone searches for "digital menu board" or "digital screen for my business", this is almost always what they mean. It is the category used by manufacturers, integrators and software vendors, and it applies equally to a neighborhood restaurant with one screen and to a retail chain with fifty.
How does digital signage work in a typical business?
It works with three pieces: a screen in the store, content (an image or video with your promotion) and a schedule that decides what shows and when. The screen connects to the internet, downloads the content you published from the software, and loops it until you publish something new.
- Screen: a smart TV, a regular TV with an Android box, a monitor, or a tablet on the counter. You do not need professional hardware to start.
- Content: the piece people actually see — menu, price, combo, promotion, seasonal notice. You create it once and reuse it.
- Scheduling: the days and hours each piece should appear. For example breakfast from 6:00 to 11:00 a.m. and lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Scheduling is the part that saves the most work and the one most people underestimate. A barbershop in Medellín set up its Tuesday 2-for-1 once: the promotion turns itself on and off, and the barbers never touch it. That is the normal behavior of a well-configured screen.
With several screens the logic is identical, only the scale changes. A store in Cali went from two days to five minutes to change the campaign across three screens, because nobody has to walk into each location to swap a poster anymore.
How is it different from printed signage?
The main difference is not aesthetics, it is the cost of changing something. A printed poster costs time and money every time a price moves; a digital screen has a monthly cost and after that changes are instant and free. Screens also let you schedule by time of day and play video.
| Aspect | Printed poster | Digital signage |
|---|---|---|
| Change a price | Redesign, print and install | Publish from your phone |
| Time-based promos | Manual: someone swaps the sign | Automatic, by schedule |
| Cost per change | Repeats with every version | No additional cost |
| Several locations | One shipment or visit per store | One publish for all of them |
In the Displei.co pilot in Colombia, businesses reported 3 hours saved per month per location compared with designing and printing signs every week, and that 98% of publishes happened without technical help. These are pilot averages: results vary by store.
Print still makes sense for businesses whose offer almost never changes. That case is worth weighing separately before you invest in hardware.
What is the difference between digital signage and DOOH?
Digital signage is the business's own screen, talking to whoever is already inside or walking past the window. DOOH is a third party's network of screens — billboards, malls, transit — selling advertising space to other brands. They are two different businesses.
Displei.co is digital signage: the screen is yours, it sits in your store and it shows your offer. We do not sell media space and we do not broker third-party inventory. If what you want is to buy ads on somebody else's screens, that is what DOOH operators do, with circuit inventory and impression-based rates.
The distinction matters when you compare prices. In digital signage you pay to manage your own screens; in DOOH you pay to appear on screens you do not control. Numbers from one category are useless for budgeting the other.
How does Displei.co do digital signage with AI?
Displei.co removes the step that stops most businesses: designing. You describe the promotion in one sentence, the AI generates two designs with your logo, colors and typography, you pick one, and it is published and scheduled on the screen. In the pilot that path took 2 minutes from idea to screen.
- You describe it: "Cheese bread + coffee combo for $6,900 until 11 a.m."
- The AI designs it: two ready versions with your brand applied.
- It publishes and schedules: pick days and hours and the screen obeys on its own.
A bakery owner in Bogotá sums it up like this: she used to print a new sign every week, and now she types the promo of the day on her phone and two minutes later it is on the counter screen. Pilot businesses rated ease of use 4.8 out of 5; results vary by store.
The model is self-service with published prices in Colombian pesos: the Esencial plan costs COP $129,000 per month (plus 19% VAT) and includes up to 3 screens; the Pro plan costs COP $397,000 per month (plus 19% VAT) with up to 10 screens, AI images and video. No mandatory quote to get started.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to buy a special screen for digital signage?
- No. A smart TV you already own works, as does a regular TV with an Android box (a one-time COP $140,000 to $400,000) or a tablet (COP $320,000 to $600,000) for the counter.
- Does the screen need to be online all the time?
- It needs a connection to receive the changes you publish. Once downloaded, the content keeps playing; when the connection returns, the screen syncs with whatever you published last.
- Can a promotion be scheduled to appear only during certain hours?
- Yes. You schedule it by day and time range, like a Tuesday 2-for-1 that turns on and off without any staff involvement.
- Does Displei.co sell advertising on other people's screens?
- No. Displei.co is digital signage for the screen in your own store. Selling ad space on third-party screens is DOOH, a different category with different providers.
